Rachel's Rain Garden
In 2011, the area behind the Parker House (adjacent to Academy Alley by the Upper School) was converted to a rain garden. Named after Rachel Holsinger, a veteran Biology Teacher at the Upper School, this garden has become a both a functional addition to the neighborhood as well as a beautiful place to visit with friends.
Stormwater runoff from the adjacent alley is funneled into an underground basin where it soaks into the ground and is filtered. This reduces erosion, water pollution, and flooding in the area. A variety of native plant species are planted in and around the depression. The garden area was designed by a generous donation of time by Joseph Hillenmeyer. David Dean also donated his time to create the depression for the garden. Anonymous donations helped complete the garden itself and students, faculty, and staff both planted and continue to help maintain it.
During construction, a sistern was discovered in the basin itself and remains in part of the basin.
