Posted 10/12/2016 04:21PM

Lucy Bryans VanMeter, the late wife of Judge Laurance B. VanMeter, graduated from Sayre School in 1979 and subsequently earned degrees from Smith College and the University of Kentucky College of Law. While her passion was her family, Lucy was involved in community activities and served on a number of boards: Sayre School, of which she had served as a long time trustee and also as Chairman of the Board; The Friends of Raven Run; and the Lexington Children's Museum. In addition, she was a lifelong member of Christ Church Episcopal, where she taught Sunday school, and a member of the Idle Hour Country Club and the Keeneland Club. Lucy’s extraordinary volunteer work and leadership was the success of many Sayre School campus developments: the construction of the Upper School, the remodeling of the Middle School, and the renovation of the playground and Library. In 2008, Lucy was awarded the David A. Sayre Medallion in recognition of her long and outstanding service to Sayre School. On October 6, 2016, the Upper School officially dedicated its building to Lucy. Judge VanMeter, his sons John Thomas and Browning along with fiance Claire Sweeney attended the ceremony.
