Multicultural Middle Schoolers Host Second Annual International Night
The aroma of spices filled the air as families gathered in the Buttery, their conversations mingling with live music playing in the background. It was the second annual International Night, organized by Sayre’s Multicultural Middle Schoolers (M&M) club.
Against a backdrop of colorful streamers and flags, students and their parents browsed tables laden with sweet and savory offerings from around the world – including mini churros from Spain, samosas from India, kebbeh from Lebanon, empanadas from Puerto Rico, all prepared with love by families eager to share their heritage.
Sayre families provided food and drinks representing 12 different cultures, giving attendees a taste of the diversity that makes Sayre so unique. The event also featured games, face painting, and music and dance performances.
“Being a part of a community and having a sense of belonging is not only important for our kids but for ourselves,” said Janette Hatchett, M&M club sponsor. “Coming together as a community to celebrate different cultures is something the M&M club looks forward to every year.”
Laying the foundation
The Multicultural Middle Schoolers club is open to all fifth through eighth grade students who want to learn about and celebrate the wide range of cultures represented at Sayre. Members meet monthly to engage in activities and discussions around topics such as inclusion and belonging.
Three years ago, club members began exploring the idea of a culinary event. In May 2023, they held a Cultural Food Day, with members contributing dishes from around the world.
The event was so successful that students and sponsors decided to plan an even bigger celebration. That resulted in the first International Night in January 2024, celebrating cultures represented by the student body with food, music, and games.
“We received nothing but positive responses to our event,” Janette said. “We knew we had to plan for our second annual International Night.”
Collaboration in action
As with past events, this year’s International Night required a lot of behind-the-scenes planning and collaboration. From brainstorming ideas to coordinating logistics, the students, along with teachers and parents, worked together to make the evening come to life.
“We would like to thank our families who volunteered to make dishes and host food tables, and our teacher volunteers for giving up their evening to support us in our mission to make this a night to remember,” Janette said.
