At Sayre School, we offer a rigorous and enriching academic experience. A cornerstone of that is our robust Advanced Placement (AP) program. For students seeking to challenge themselves, earn college credit, and investigate subjects they're passionate about, AP courses are a solid option.

Advanced Placement courses bridge the gap between high school and college by providing the potential to earn college credit, explore academic interests, and ultimately save time and money on higher education.

AP courses also prepare students for the demands of college-level coursework. By tackling challenging material and developing effective study habits, students will be more prepared when they transition to college.

Why AP at Sayre?

Many schools offer advanced placement classes. Here's what sets our programming apart.

Broad course selection

We provide a broad range of AP courses across various disciplines. Currently we offer AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science A, AP Computer Science Principles, AP English Language & Composition, AP Environmental Science, AP French Language & Culture, AP Literature & Composition, AP Music Theory, AP Physics I, AP Physics II, AP Physics C-Mechanics, AP Psychology, AP Spanish Language and Culture, AP Statistics, AP Studio Art Drawing, AP U.S. Government and Politics, and AP U.S. History.

Culture of academic achievement

Sayre’s challenging college-prep curriculum motivates students to strive for their best. We want each of our students to gain admittance to colleges where they will grow and thrive. AP coursework is a fundamental part of that goal, giving students a competitive advantage in college admissions and helping to jumpstart their college careers.

Dedicated and experienced faculty

Our teachers are experts in their fields, with over 83% having advanced degrees. They are also passionate about guiding students through challenging coursework. With an average class size of 14, our faculty can provide personalized attention to help ensure that every student succeeds.

Emphasis on critical thinking and analysis

AP courses are designed to cultivate the higher-level thinking skills needed for college success. This philosophy complements Sayre’s vision of helping each student acquire self-discipline, develop critical thinking abilities, and engage in civil discourse in order to be informed, impactful members of society. Because all of the courses are designed with these ideas in mind, advanced placement classes are a natural extension of what we’re already doing.

Proof in the numbers

Ultimately, the best evaluation of a school’s AP programming is the outcomes. In 2024, an impressive 91% of Sayre students and 89% of seniors taking the exams earned passing scores (scores of 3 or higher). Among individual disciplines, our 66 AP scholars achieved the following:

  • 98% History pass rate
  • 97% Science pass rate
  • 93% World Language pass rate
  • 90% English pass rate
  • 82% Math pass rate with Computer Science

What to expect

AP courses require a significant time commitment, including regular homework assignments, in-depth readings, and rigorous assessments. As a parent, you can help your student determine which AP classes to prioritize, considering their other courses, involvement in clubs, athletics, visual and performing arts, and community activities. The Upper School Program of Studies outlines expectations for each AP course.

Here's what else you and your student can expect from the AP experience at Sayre:

  • Emphasis on independent learning: Students are expected to take ownership of their learning, actively participate in class discussions, and seek help when needed.
  • Preparation for AP exams: Throughout the year, teachers provide ample opportunities to practice and prepare for the National AP Exams in May.
  • A collaborative learning environment: While AP courses are challenging, Sayre students will find a supportive network of peers and teachers who are invested in their success.
  • Additional resources: AP students have access to a well-equipped library and technology resources to support their studies.
